My Crazy Quilt Empty

My Crazy Quilt

The quilt started out a nice large size
With colors and textures to delight the eyes
It was created from silks and satins
Soft to the touch
And though luxurious
Didn’t cost very much.
It was made from old blouses and soft silk ties
And satin from fancy lingerie too-
Anything that was beautiful to see,
And only the most special would do.
The stitches were embroidered on the dark rich colors
In thread so bright and gay
That just to glance at the beauty created
Made for a smile that day.
This was the quilt of my childhood
The one that cradled me at night,
Kept me in warmth and comfortable
When my parents turned out the light.
I slept so sweetly under the quilt
And played on it with my toys
And wept hot tears when I was sad
And giggled and laughed at life’s joys.
But soon the quilt was too worn to save
And no longer could it be repaired
And eventually Mom discarded it
Though I had hoped that it would be spared.
I think of it often and fondly
When I find that I can’t sleep
And once again travel back in my memory
To that time so precious and sweet.

Especially loved this:
"But soon the quilt was too worn to save
And no longer could it be repaired
And eventually Mom discarded it
Though I had hoped that it would be spared."

Seems a shame it couldn't be saved, do you think she was absolutely sure of that?
I know my Mom threw away much due to just poor upkeep and negligence.
She actually loaned things out to some very careless family members that returned them broken torn or filthy at times, so sad.
God Bless.

I like your description of the detail and love put into that quilt. Too bad it was thrown out. Mom's don't always know what we hold dear, though, in their tireless work of cleaning and caring for the family. This poem reminds me of Earlene Fowler's Bennie Harper Mystery series. She's a very talented Christian author, and in her series, Bennie is the curator of a folk art museum that specializes in Quilts and she often finds herself mixed up in some murder mystery. I know it sounds a little "Murder She Wrote," but her books are really very good. Most of the books are based on a theme of a different type of quilt.

It started out full size, then was twin size and then was worn down to strings. It so fragile that it got to the point where there was nothing left. I wish I had just a patch of it but I went off to college and don't know what happened to it. Mom and Grandmom were sentimental too.
