First and Last

Stored in my heart
Are special memories
Both of "firsts" and "lasts"
with special meanings to me.
First kiss, first love, first time to ski,
first time to step in the ocean
or to see a special movie on TV.
Little things and big things
Each one has made a memory.
Remembering special sights and special
events that I attended
were memories I held onto
as well as when things ended.
The last time I kissed my grandparents,
and my Mom and Dad,
the last time I saw them
Was a memory so sad.
The last time I held each little pet
That I have had over the years
Is a fond remembrance which brings me
both joy and tears.
I smile because of the sweet memories I had
and that will always stay;
I shed a tear or two because
They aren't still with me today.
Precious memories help make us
Who we are and without them
We wouldn't feel complete
Whether they are joyous ones
Or the ones so bittersweet.
