Truckin Empty
PostSubject: Truckin   Truckin EmptySun Feb 05, 2012 11:49 pm

Written by special request by Gary Bostwick as a salute to all the brave men and women who do a thankless job and without whom this country would have nothing. Nothing there is to buy got to the shelf by accident. Every item was moved by a truck at some point in its journey from the manufacturer to your house.

Driving down the highway with nothing much to do
Just listening to the radio and thinking about You
Worrying about things at home that I should have done
Hoping that tomorrow I can get another run.

Watching all the mile markers as each one ticks by
Almost like a clock where the batteries never die.
Knowing how far I’ve come and how far I’ve yet to go
Is something I don’t like but I really have to know.

There are scales up ahead where they will check the truck
Praying that I’m legal so I’m not out of luck
God please make my logbooks look like they’re supposed to
Don’t let them make me park it, I got too much to do.

The road is a solitary place when you are all alone
And you are just absolutely weary to the bone
You’re trying to keep it between the white lines
While you are trying to make your deadlines.

Talking to God because He is always there
Sometimes you think He may be the only one to care.
It takes a special person to be a trucker too
Knowing that ole big rig and just what she will do.

It takes a special sort of person to be a trucker’s wife
You have to trust your husband and how he lives his life
Decisions have to be made alone sometimes
And it seems like he’s been gone for lifetimes

Being all alone to do things by yourself
You have to get them done can’t just set them on a shelf
When he doesn’t call you wonder if he forgot
Or if something is really wrong and he just cannot.

Truckin is a tough life all the way around
And all sorts of temptations they do abound
There are dangers everywhere on the highways
Trying to get home makes everything cause delays.

So, if you’re a trucker
Here’s what you have to do
Just rely on God
He will get you through.

loved it miss cleo, it's a tough life and i am very grateful to only work local right now but work is sometimes scarce. sometimes i get four or five runs a week, sometimes i'm lucky to get one. my relationships have done better since i haven't been over the road, it's hard on a person...very solitary, always pushing the sleep threshold to make appointments on time, penalized if you don't. i lost my truck four years back when the economy went bust. being self-employed was my dream come true, but i have learned so much from the experience though it was painful and i cried like a baby when they took my truck. i have learned to do so much more with so much less (better stewardship) it was an excellent teaching and i am grateful to the Lord for it.

Hey man, we had our own truck as well. Been there, done that. That poem was from the heart and past experience. It was the hardest thing we have done in a long time to sell that truck of ours. The government has regulated the business until it is nothing like it used to be and a truckers life is much harder now. That was the only thing my hubby knew how to do so it was double hard. Things do get better though. He now drives for a dealer ship hauling new Lexus around the country. Pays better and paperwork is much easier. So sometimes things work out for the best if you just keep trusting in the Lord. I have found the more I praise Him even for the worst things, the better things get. Hope you get blessings poured out from Heaven that will fill your life with love. I will be praying for you still.

I know it's my favorite. I love work that comes from personal experience. It has such a sincere, human touch to it. Great work!

I have never read a poem about a trucker and I know how they are sometimes taken for granted and people don't always realize what a hard and sometimes lonely job it can be . This poem has given even more respect for the true, honest truckers out there who love their job and families and to have faith in God to help them in their trucker journeys...
Great piece, loved it :)

Thank you so much. Having been a truckers wife and gone with him on many occasions, I have more respect for them than most. They do a necessary job and people do not realize without the trucker, nothing would move. It always hits a truck somewhere in its journey.
Pray for them always.
