Question about Music Copywrites Empty
PostSubject: Question about Music Copywrites   Question about Music Copywrites EmptyMon Feb 06, 2012 3:49 pm

I have been thinking of and several people have suggested that my poems have a certain melodic quality and I should have music playing as I read them. That is fine, but do you know if there is instrumentals out there that I could use that are not copywrited and what kind of trouble do you think I could get it if I accidentally used the wrong one? That is of course if you know. I would appreciate any help you could give. Thanks. Jan

My friend and I wrote a Childrens musical years ago and did original music...right hand only and got our church organist to put the cords to the songs for us.

You cannot use other people's instrumentals with your music lyrics and, say, record it and post it on a website or attempt to publish it in any other way. If you, say, attempt to recite a poem in your home with other people's instrumentals with no attempts to make a recording and publish it, you'll be okay. On the other hand, older works that have been around for many, many years become public property at some point, so, therefore, the same rules do not apply. I would look for instrumentals that have been around for a very long time, such as Bach or Mozart, and I'm pretty sure there are some Christian tunes and old hymnals that are not copyrighted. It's just a matter of a simple internet search to find which ones you can use and which you cannot.
