For my grandmother

You fought the odds
The cancer is gone
Some thought
You couldn’t win
But God brought
You through it
And healed you

Now dementia attacks
Stealing memories from your mind
Confusion and empty spaces
Are all it leaves behind

I went to see you today
But you didn’t know my name
Even though I still act
And look just the same

If only I could free you
From this prison that you’re in
I’d replace the stolen pieces

Sniff I can really relate to this one. My grandma had dementia before she passed several years ago. This one really touched my heart.

Thanks Ms Thena and Laura! There were many things I wanted to say in this piece. Every time I tried I would start to cry. I'm glad some of what I'm feeling came through.

i had a brain clot years ago (classic efacia-stroke), i was imprisoned, my mind was clear but unable to speak or write, it was a frightening experience! it felt like i was being buried alive.
Grandmother is in my prayers.

i might add that...that was the initial experience but within a very short time i was very peaceful like a wide-eyed infant exploring the world, sights, sounds, with his eyes for the first time. that quickly, one goes from participant to observer. i trust and believe that she is in the Lord's tender loving care. in this incapacitated state, dependent on others' kindness and care, she is incapable of 'sin' and innocent as a babe, God's ways are not our's ("be prepared").

That is great comfort to me oneagleswings. I thank you for your insight. I know God is with her and that He has her in His hand.
