My Grandmother's Dishes
My Grandmother had some dishes
That were much too fine for daily use
She wanted to keep them safe and unzipped
Free from the family's daily abuse.
My Mother had a tablecloth
Much too delicate for daily wear
She wanted to protect it from the boys-
Afraid that it might tear.
I had a lovely crystal pitcher
Etched with a delicate design
I really wanted to use it
But it seemed much too fine.
Today I sat the table with dishes oh so grand
And put ice tea in the pitcher so delicately etched by hand
I placed them on the tablecloth of linen so lovely to see
And had a lovely fancy luncheon just for me.
I hope when I am no longer here
My daughter will enjoy the things I will leave
And if they get a bit worn out
That no one will grieve.
Things that we enjoy as special are made for us
And not to cause us stress or make us fuss.
And as we use them we create memories that last
And bring sweet memories to others of the past.
