I recently jumped through the many hoops that it takes to apply to graduate school, which include applying to the program and school, getting several letters of recommendation, writing a purpose statement, sending off old college transcripts, and taking the GRE test. It was a long shot for me.
The program I applied to was impacted, meaning the program is overfull and they are only letting in very few people, in this case it was only eight people out of hundreds. I also had to get one of the professors to agree to mentor me after reading all of the materials I turned in for my application. This is no small task, as they usually like to take on students they already know. No amount of pomp and fluff that you can write in your purpose statement letters will change their minds.
Although I have a stellar academic history and great on-the-job experience, I had several negatives against me in this situation. First, none of the professors remembered me, as I haven't been to college in quite a while. Second, my GRE scores weren't very high because I only had a few days to study for the test. Another thing that I did that was very risky on my part was, I only applied to one school. Normally people apply to several schools in the hope that one will accept them.
After being laid off and feeling directionless because of the bad economy and not being able to secure employment, I kept asking the Lord what it was He wanted me to do. When I applied to this one school and having all these points against me to get in, I asked the Lord that if it was from Him that I should go back to school, He would get me in.
Not only did I get in, but the most sought after mentoring professor in the whole school accepted me to mentor. I'm speechless at the wonders and glories of our good Lord. His love knows no bounds!
