"For your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth." -Psalm 26:3 (NIV)
I have had a concept for a collection of songs in my mind for a while, based upon some scripture I'd been reading. I had the title for this song "Ever Before Me" in my mind but was having difficulty writing the words to correctly convey the thought I intended. The chorus was just me singing the phrase "your love is ever before me" over and over to a simple chord progression. Then I heard about Bethany Beckett. On October 25th, 2010, Bethany passed away, one day before she would turn 24. Her and Duncan had been married only 4 and a half months. Duncan was a friend of mine but since he had been called to be a missionary in Mexico with his wife, I had never had the opportunity to actually meet his wife. When I heard of her passing this verse came immediately to mind and I began to pen the words to this song.
Ever Before Me
Another day and a flow of tears
comes pouring from my eyes.
My hands are raised as the plan I'd planned
is taken from my life.
The overwhelming flood of peace
comes as you draw me nigh.
Remove the pain, the hurt, the pride;
the broken heart inside.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
What happens when the trials come,
the mockery and scorn.
The things of life are ripped away,
my heart inside me torn.
Fiery darts are thrown my way,
His armour remains strong.
A shield of love surrounding me
and this is my song.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
Your love is ever before me.
