Shares in Smoke
Deut 10:8, Deut 14:29, Joshua 13:14,33, Heb 9:15,
Joshua 13:33a, But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance.
How would the Levites have felt about being disinherited? They were called to serve all of Israel knowing they could never gain what the rest of the people had. The Levite wage earner had no share, no rainy day fund, nothing to provide his family with to help them get ahead when he was gone. They were commanded to live off the offerings and gifts of their fellow man. Lumped in with the refugees and fatherless they were. Did they sometimes feel like they did not belong in their world? Or maybe they felt like second hand citizens living off handouts. Did all the offerings look like their share of the inheritance going up in smoke? Yet they served God knowing all along this was not for punishment but by promise and by God’s providing hand.
Joshua 13:33b, the Lord the God of Israel is their inheritance, as he promised them.
The Levites where a special tribe and people, hand picked by God to have him only as their inheritance. Yes, they were the ones privileged to carry the law of the covenant in the ark and to stand before the Lord to minister and pronounce blessings in his name. As they lived a life of service, God provided for them, not just material things but himself. He is their inheritance. This was the providential promise. It ensured that the Levites would serve God and live for him. They would spend their lives living separate from the rest of the nation. This is a picture of their salvation in Old Testament terms. For generations to come the promise of salvation is theirs. Here God takes the long view looking out for them and for us.
Today we are the beneficiaries’ of this inheritance, of this covenant and this promise. We are called to live the Levite life, to live differently in the same world. In this life we carry God’s law in our hearts; we make his gospel known by serving others, and so pronounce blessings on them. As we live out our lives of service God has already provided of himself by sending Jesus; through him we may receive the promised eternal inheritance.
