Beloved, I Love You Unconditionally

I used to look for love & acceptance from those who I’ve shared liquor bottle bottoms
Even in between the sheets or car back seats of anyone who held any particular interest in me
Then I’d beat the habit cold turkey focusing on work & education
Thinking the money would buy whatever I had lacked and the knowledge would safe guard me from hurts & disappointments
None were sufficient
Not by strength nor by might
Not even the determination I had prayed for day & night
Only the sweet persistent whispers of your saving grace & unconditional love chased after me with hope
You gave me a hope to a surreal reality that care nothing about my shortcomings & mistakes
A reality that continues every breath that I undeservingly take
All you asked was for my heart & soul
Broken it was until you made me whole
I wonder constantly why you would do a thing like this for me
The only reply I would receive:
“Beloved, I love you unconditionally”
You knew me from day one and you said you love me
You told me that your love ran so deep that you gave your Son’s life for mine
Why would you sacrifice your Loved One for me?
I’m flawed, dysfunctional, & disobedient towards you
Yet you still love me
Your Son, whose life was given as my ransom, willingly surrendered himself knowing I wouldn’t appreciate the gift
I lie, curse, fornicate, & carry prejudice in my heart
Sometimes the pressure of perfection & “getting right” overwhelm me
You love this broken, depressed, & often disenfranchised being
Someone who knows poverty, abandonment, & abuse
As if they were every day clothes
However, none of this matters to the two of you, because you both still love me
