A rhyme unwritten...a song unsung

This life is but a moment that I represent
and when I'm old I'll recollect on how quickly it went
Should I be blessed enough to remember those who truly care
nothing will hurt as much as the times I wasn't there...

My eyes have grown pale, the twinkle now gone
Ever so frail are these legs I stand upon
My feet shuffle slowly across the cold wooden floor
and sometimes I can't remember who I am anymore
Yet every once in awhile, for a brief moment in time
I'll have a vivid memory of who I was in a rhyme
Ha!...A lifetime ago, long since out of sight
These days my fingers are so stiff I'm no longer able to write
Let's see now, even were I able, what might I write of
I've since given up on dreams, desires, love...
All of the things that I thought that I had when I was young
now just a rhyme unwritten...a song unsung
You see, I lived for the world and all the treasures it would bring
only to find I have nothing on the day of death's sting
The gallows of the world surely slowly let me swing
as they taught me a man becomes a pawn once he thinks he's the king...

I close my eyes to try and hide and escape from the pain
as the faces blend together and the smiles turn to rain
Memories sadly dance behind an old man's stare
and nothing hurts as much as the times I wasn't there...
