Famine for the Word of God

“Thanks for that pocket Testament, but I must give it back. You see, I have a number of friends. Good friends. Who have helped shape my life. Gotten me through knotholes. And not one of them ever turned the conversation toward Jesus. He just didn’t measure into the formula for them. Neither for my family.

And I have watched your church beat up on the gays, the outsiders, the liberals and the pro-choicers. And I have listened to some of your TV preachers who seem angry about everything. Even tried to read one of those Left Behind books. Wow what a scary trip! How could a loving God get us into any of that?

And you know I’m not much of a reading man anyway. Seems like all the time I can afford goes to the newspaper, the sports page and a couple of magazine articles.
Nope, thanks, not for me. Not your Gospels, your bloody cross, your peculiar language, your heavenly imaginings, your God-Man Jesus. Perhaps somebody else could make better use of it. I’ll just continue to do my best.”
