i just woke up and i've always been burning
forgot i was burning
for a short little while
woke up in the middle of
before the dream and after
woke up in the dream
from the dream
out of the dream
and into the life i'll always remember
life was life during the dream
but now life is life
life redefined for me
to what it's always been
body on fire, senses blurred
eyes abulge and roving
in the smoky haze
i can't speak now that i'm awake
but i can still speak now
because i'm not awake yet
though i be kindled
i've yet to be consumed
for our God is a consuming fire
Eternal in His being
ever consuming, always kindled
looming in His majesty
terrible in His dread
we burn together in His shadow
scrambling about our bodies
leaping and hissing
we gulp on empty throats
lift our stiffened necks to Him
to beg and beg and curse and weep
and gnash our teeth
screaming for the dream again
for the Man who died to make it so
for the Man who died to wake us up
for the Man became the dream for us
but we chose ourselves to wake us up
and our burning bodies wash ashore
but the lake is quick at every step
like a snare about our feet
at every footfall sucking down
we wade ashore in burning bodies
emerge from the cool deep screaming
as infants cast from a dead womb
we walk ashore upon a roiling beach
a lake of fire for our feet
the ground gives way like quicksand
and we sink, and scream, and burn
the fire washes over us like water
til all we see is angry light
forever in the shadow of His wings
but His wings shelter those in the water
and His shadow burns us to the touch
His back turned to us in wrath
and our hissing like the sizzling pop
of bodies melting in the lake
we melt away into the fire
and swim forevermore
ever toward the shore
