WATER
Which way is your life flowing?

Man, like water, seeks a place of rest;
Safe from all the slopes of test;
In the hollow place, where the storm's at ebb,
Secure from this life's tangled web.
In his sheltered spot man gathers in
Blocks for a wall to build 'round him:
Earthly things he gathers near
To keep out want and need and fear.
All these things are done by man
Destiny's key to hold in hand.
To shelter himself from trial and test,
like water, man runs to a place of rest.

But danger there is in such a place,
For people there can't see the face
Of Him who says, "Trust Me instead,
And I will give you daily bread."
Much easier instead it seems to be
To trust only that which we can see.
We've built our wall, we feel secure.
And self alone has made us sure.
No need there is in such a state
To trust in God or on Him wait.
He wants to guide; He wants to lead:
But we're at rest-- we feel no need.

But man, like water, can have no use
When allowed to run wildly on the loose.
For man, like water, goes where he will,
But usually downward, lowest places to fill.
And there he lays to stagnate and spoil;
Yes, free from test, and free from toil,
But free from the lowest heavenly dream;
Of no more use than a stagnant stream.
Oh, there's a so much better way for man,
Not at rest, but at use, in God's great plan.
When water is harnassed, contained, controlled
It's many uses then unfold.
