For Kids Whose Parents Have Divorced

Mommy and Daddy Got a Divorce

Mommy and Daddy got a divorce
And Daddy moved out of the house
My brother and I
are on our best behavior
And as quiet as a mouse.
Mommy seems so sad
And we kids are sad too
But it seems in a case of divorce
There's nothing that we kids can do.
We visited Daddy in his new home
And he said that he loves us still
Cares so much about our lives
And says he always will.
He said that it isn't our fault
That he and Mommy are not together
And he doesn't want
us to fill that way
Not now or ever.
He took us back home
Where we kissed him goodbye
As Mommy met us at the door
But it was so strange to know
That Daddy didn't live there anymore.

Daddy Moved Out Today

I came home from school today
To see a truck outside our door
And thought that something great
Might be delivered from a store.
But once I got inside
I saw without a doubt
They were not bringing items in
But taking items out.
Daddy's desk and his chair,
His favorite study lamp as well
All of his clothes and books
As far as I could tell.
Daddy came and picked me up
And looked me in the eye
When he told me to be brave
And asked me not to cry.
He said he was moving out
Because of something called separation
And something else I think
He said was mediation.
But when he said the word divorce
My heart seemed to flip and flop
And I started crying so hard
That I didn't think I could stop.
I watched him drive away
And now our whole family is sad
For it's really going to be strange
Without both Mom and Dad.

Those poems broke my heart. Divorce is the toughest on the kids. I wish there wasn't so much of it.
