Alone
By Scott Newport

Keyless door ajar
Strolling path no bars

Alone in empty pews
Sunlight sheer peeking through

Avoiding scared nails protrude
Searching worn finish elude

Grey shadows on the floor
Drawing a cross, there’s more

Fluttered moth on the book
Tempted me to take a look

Silent creaking then a moan
Nameless, thinking, still alone

Wow, beautiful work. You walked me down the isles of a vacuous, melancholy church and left me needing more.

i got that feel as well lora...
perhaps scott will explain the meaning as he intended it to be interpreted but honestly...i like the "open to interpretation" style of writing poetry very much.
nicely written !!

God Bless

I have some special images in my head as well. My little country church has been turned into a house. Makes me so sad that there is no congregation for it now.

My writing mentor always tells me to allow the poem to have more of an open meaning, not to be so precise. I guess it’s like, “don’t tell them what happened, show them.”

This poem was some what inspired by the Alan Jackson video, “Sissy’s Song.” It is also partly the idea of how one can feel alone, even with in the boundaries of church.

I do a lot of my writing during church services. I never go with out my note book.

Thanks for asking. I can still hear those old wood pews creaking.

Scott

Got my attention. Makes one see what they are reading. Leaving impressions to ponder on is one thing, but being able to visualize as the work is read and still have something later to chew on also is for me, most delicious. And that is why I love the Word of God. Blessings
