The Last Dance

All night he had stood by her bedside;
Now one more kiss and he walked away.
He was tall and slender
With hair that had turned gray.
He looked at us and said
“It’s over.
Our last dance together is done:
I will treasure the memory,
Of every single one.”
“For our love was a dance, he said,
Started when we were young and strong
But continued through these many years
When sometimes it was hard to move along.
We danced to celebrate our wedding
And the addition of tiny feet to our score,
We dance to celebrate being together
And never wanted anything more.
We carried one another when needed
And our steps slowed down a bit
But never did we consider
That our dance we ought to quit.
We danced right through hardship
And times when things were tough
We danced through illness together
When the going was really rough.
We danced up the hills and down the valleys
We danced on the sandy seashore
But now my sweet partner is going home
And shall dance there for evermore.
I wish I could see onto Heaven’s balcony
And send a kiss to her from me
Just to say that I will join her someday
And we shall dance through eternity.

Thena, I loved reading this. The concept behind the story is fantastic and it really spoke to me about how Love, in regards to all relatinoships, has its times of simple and jubilant successes and then, if you dance like me, sometimes you mess up the steps. It was truly a delight to read.

In partiuclar I liked the finale:
I wish I could see onto Heaven’s balcony
And send a kiss to her from me
Just to say that I will join her someday
And we shall dance through eternity.

and the phrasing:
Our last dance together is done:
I will treasure the memory,
Of every single one.”

Really emotionally grabbing Big Smile

I wrote it for my friend who lost her mother. Her dad said "This is our last dance" as he sat by his wife's bedside.
