Closer Than A Brother
An original poem by James Faulkner
As I look back regarding all the events in my life,
You've always been there, even amidst the strife.
I've turned my back on you, crucified you with my mouth.
You told me to go north and I deliberately went south.
I ignored you when things were going well...
and yet, when times got hard, I was always tugging on your shirt tail.
So now I'm older...I realize all the hurt that I caused you.
Tell me, Master, what can I possibly do?
To make up for all the pain, heartache, discomfort, and disdain.
The many, many times that I drove you insane.
And then he answered me, to my surprise.
"My friend, my brother...I don't want to see your demise.
I gave my life for you, so that you may live.
I knew you before the womb, and yet, I chose to freely give.
They beat me, tortured me, and I became the sacrifice.
This had to happen in order for you to have eternal life.
So you see, my son, I've always been there.
Even when you cursed me, I watched over you with care.
I'll never leave you. I love you deeper than a mother.
In good times and in bad; I'll always stick closer than a brother."
