Thirty-eight weeks Empty

It was roughly six weeks when Amy really knew

that she was running a little late by a week or two

Her heart started pounding deep within her chest

as she smiled at the results of the pregnancy test

When Tony came home and kicked off his shoes

she jumped in his arms and gave him the news

She said "Lay with and pray with me and thank God with me"

and Tony said "God didn't do it, it was just meant to be"

Fifteen weeks later they were both jumping for joy

when the ultrasound told 'em they were having a boy

They spent the rest of the day just walking the mall

buying diapers, clothes, a little basketball

Tony bought her a t-shirt that read "Baby on board"

and Amy bought him one that read "Trust in the Lord"

Later that evening as Tony ran to the store

Amy found his shirt on the closet floor

Thirty-eight weeks and they were on their way

for their very first, two day hospital stay

Cutting through traffic, moving along

but when they arrived at the hospital, something went terribly wrong

"GET AN I.V., SHE'S STARTING TO SEIZE"

and Tony cried out "God, help us please..."

Contained chaos, controlled commotion

as Tony's whole world moved in slow-motion

Fifty-two weeks, as it started getting dark

Tony pushed his son through the edge of the park

Crunching through the leaves on their way to the car

Tony looked up and saw a twinkling star

He stared at the star, and then he stared at his son

and then he reflected on that day, and what he had done

One life gone, but two had just begun

and then he stared at his wife and asked "How was your run"

There were two bumper stickers on the back of their Ford

One read "Baby on board", the other "Trust in the Lord"

I love the messages you put into your work. They often make me sniffle and glad to have read.
