Lessons from Ruts and Furrows in a Country Road
Seeing the deep ruts left by heavy truck
wheels and machinery
I felt a twinge that lead me to think
about my past
When summer rains on dirt roads
were the norm
And how the smooth surface the grader left
was not to last.
There’s something about furrows in the dirt
covered by winter snow
That reminds me of how hard it is sometimes in life
To get to where you want to go.
Sometimes we let life put us in a rut
of our own making
When we hesitate to choose
another route instead
And the depth of our own furrows (habits)
Keep us from being able
to get ahead.
