| By Jan Phillips We were poor when I was just a kid No fast food was on our table We had to cook to eat instead My clothes were made from feed sacks Hand crafted you might say Not ready made as they are today. It was really hard to see at night Because we had no electric light But we got along alright. I had one pair of shoes to last me all the year When they got too small the toes were cut clear. I would get a new pair the next year. We had an outhouse to use in the day And we had a bucket beside the bed for dark That we had to empty every day. The good old days were both good and bad They are days gone by but I’m not sad They made me as I am today and I’m okay. |

| I try to write what I know about. It doesn't seem so stilted that way. |

| Thank you for the good words. I don't regret a minute of the past, but I sure don't want to go back and live it again. |

| Seems like we are so much alike Ms. Thena that we should be sisters. I was a farm girl until around 12 also. I was in 7th grade when we moved to town. I started in first grade at five years old so was a little ahead of most in my grade. Still had outhouse and mom still grew a big garden, still went to western Oklahoma to pull cotton so didn't change some things much. |

| Moved in 7th grade here too. Loved moving to town although I missed the animals and trees to climb.
Used to climb up in the hickory tree with a quilt and read a book. Hung by my heels from the pear trees and walked through the melon patch and garden with a salt shaker snacking on water melon or tomatoes ..LOL
Had a playhouse under a big tree by the gravel road and baked mud pies. :-) |

| Sounds a little more sophisticated than what we did. I used to pack a lunch when I was about 7 or 8 and go into the woods and take a book to read. My mother never seemed to worry about me so I took advantage of that to make myself scarce. |
