Holding our first bundle of joy
He hardly made a peep
He was cuddly and cute in that hospital room
How hard could he be to keep?
Arriving at home we had our first class in Reality 101
We were wakened each hour till 5:30’s dawn
And wondered - Oh what have we done?
Oh I wish that I could sleep over
Sleep past five thirty a.m.
I wish that I could sleep over
Over and over again
I didn’t sleep a wink last night
My face is tired and worn
A good night’s sleep is the wish I’ve wished
Since the day my baby was born
“Dad, can I have a sleep-over?”
My teenager asked me last night
My thoughts went back to times before
And I shuttered in horrible fright.
Why is it called a sleep-over
When really they don’t want to rest?
There is carnage and laughter, wrestling and noise
Just to entertain one single guest.
Oh I wish that I could sleep over
Sleep past five thirty a.m.
I wish that I could sleep over
Over and over again
I didn’t sleep a wink last night
My face is tired and worn
A good night’s sleep is the wish I’ve wished
Since the day my baby was born
This too shall pass, say the parents we know
Who’ve traveled this road before
The house will be quiet, you won’t hear a sound
when they don’t live at home anymore
They turn into adults and go out on their own
You’ll have plenty of time then for rest
You’ll miss all the laughter that came with their fun
You’ll remember these years as your best
And you’ll wish that you could sleep over
Sleep past five thirty a.m.
You will wish that you could sleep over
Over and over again
You won’t need much sleep anymore at night
Your face will be tired and worn
You’ll think back on those wonderful days
From the day your babies were born.
I had a dream the other night
There were grandkids all around
Loud happy noises were in every room
Our house was full of sound,
“Can all of us stay and sleep over?”
They asked over and over again
So we had a big sleepover
and stayed up till five thirty a.m.
We didn’t sleep a wink all night
My face looked tired and worn
Still we stayed up late havin’ all kinds of fun
Then we all slept-in in the morn!
Now, I can’t wait till they come to sleepover
We’ll stay up till five thirty a.m.
I can’t wait till they come to sleepover
Over and over again!
