Wretched the word
The songster had chosen
Wretched the plight
A wilful life broken
Memories of ill
Besmirching the past
Selfish agenda
Where peace will not last.
This the condition
That robs me this morning
Bleating out blame
And all the Law’s warning.
Oh for a rescue
Through One Who won’t fail me
Ending the guilt
And dark thoughts that jail me.
Tried all the rest
Now Jesus is pressing
Pledging a life
And flawless new dressing
His the right heart
And the perfect adhering
Offered through grace
To erase all guilt’s smearing.
